PSG in record bid for Nonda
DAVID BARNES, FRANCE
FRANCE (goalnetwork) -- Paris Saint-Germain are ready to break the
French transfer record with an offer of $20million for Rennes Congo
striker Shabani Nonda.
They made their approach after having a slightly larger bid for Nicolas
Anelka turned down by Real Madrid. PSG hope to conclude a deal
quickly for Nonda, who has been closely monitored all season by big
Italian clubs.
Nonda, 23, has scored 30 goals in two seasons with Rennes, whom
he joined from Swiss club Zurich for a fee of almost $4million. He
said: "Paris are a big club and I am interested, especially as they are
in the Champions League next season. PSG have not spoken to me
directly, but I believe they have spoken to my agent."
The deal, which would top the $18million Lyon paid Barcelona for
Brazilian striker Sonny Anderson, is currently being discussed
between club presidents Pierre Lescure, of PSG, and Pierre Blayau, of
Rennes.
Nonda, who leaves today for a three-week holiday in Australia,
expects to return to Rennes only to pick up his belongings. He said:
"I want to look elsewhere. Two years with Rennes are enough."
Rennes only just avoided relegation on the last day of the season.
