AFRICAN NATIONS CUP: Petros strikes again as Zimbabwe
wins
HARARE (September 3, 2000 3:15 p.m. EDT http://www.sportserver.com) -
Luke Petros raised his Zimbabwe goal tally to 10 with two in a sluggish 3-2 victory over
Democratic Republic of Congo in an African Nations Cup Group 6 qualifier here Sunday.
The Lancashire Steel striker, who leaves for South Africa soon to join Kaizer Chiefs,
struck after six and 73 minutes and Peter Ndlovu scored 22 minutes into the first half.
Mayele Nono converted a first-half penalty for the visiting Lions, whose other goal came
from Kambamu Wakanyengele midway through the second period at a sparsely-populated
National Stadium.
Crippling fuel shortages, harsh economic conditions and a 200 percent ticket price hike
were blamed for a meager crowd of 10,000 in beautiful spring conditions.
Petros, who made his international debut against Zambia this year, ghosted past defenders
to finish off crosses while veteran Ndlovu found the net with a flashing far-post header
off a William Mugeyi corner.
Captain Nono reduced the arrears after goalkeeper George Mandizvidza pulled down
Wakanyengele, who leveled in the 67th minute by rising unopposed to steer in a Skito
Litimba cross.
