LUA LURED BY TOON DELIGHTS
After nearly two weeks of speculation, Colchester finally accepted Newcastle's bid for
Lomano Tresor Lua Lua this afternoon.
There were concerns earlier in the week that the deal might be in jeopardy after it was
revealed that Glasgow Rangers were also interested in the young striker, but Newcastle
United's bid proved enough for Colchester. Now all that has to be completed is Lua's
medical tommorow afternoon.
Colchester Manager Steve Whitton said: 'Although we would have preferred to keep Lomana, I
was concerned that the constant speculation about his future was affecting his form.
'Bearing in mind the possible abolition of the transfer system, I felt the time and fee
were right and recommended acceptance to the board.' Chairman Peter Heard added: 'We were
anxious not to lose Lomana but we had to respect the strong wishes of the player and his
family. 'Although he was happy at Colchester, it is perfectly understandable that he would
want to play for a Premier club.
'The transfer fee gives us the opportunity to establish financial security for the club
and will assist with the cost of the new ground. We all wish Lomana every success for the
future.' Lomana was in his second season with the U's whom he joined as a trainee. He had
scored 15 goals in 61 games (37 starts) during his short spell with Colchester, lets hope
he can build on his bright start at St James' Park.
LOMANO IS A REAL BARGAIN
Bobby Robson wants to reward the Toon Army for their fantastic support with a convincing
Worthington Cup win over Leyton Orient.Newcastle United are getting a bargain in Lomano
Lua Lua, according to the man who discovered him.
The 19-year-old was on Tyneside this morning for a medical before completing his proposed
move. And Micky Cook, Colchester United's, Director of youth, claims Lua Lua can go all
the way under Bobby Robson. Cook first saw the African-corn winger playing on Hackney
Marshes. He said: "When Lomano came to us two-and-a-half years ago he was a very raw
player. "And eventually I let him go because it was not working out."But a few
weeks later he begged me for a second chance and a lot of people thought I would be making
a big mistake giving in."But he's not looked back since and I think he can go all the
way."Lua Lua was traveling to Bramall Lane with Colchester en route to a Worthington
Cup tie with Sheffield United when the news broke. He stayed to watch the second division
side loose 3-0 before continuing
Bobby Robson expects this morning's medical to be a formality and Lua Lua should be at St
James' for tonights Worthington Cup visit of Leyton Orient. But a hat-trick against QPR in
the last round means he is cup-tied for the competition.
Micky Cook added: "Lomana was a blossoming gymnast as a boy and wanted to develop
that more than his football.
"But in East London it's not long before a kid picks up a football, and his
suppleness gave him an advantage.
"The experience I had working with him was magnificent. He deserves to make it all
the way to the top."
